Sunday Night Mash Up

This weekend saw the final ACCA weekend of this sitting, I now just have weekday revision.

This was the smallest group of the sitting (my previous classes have been 40+ people and we have been squashed into tiny rooms) and we were in the biggest room in the building.  Admittedly due to the layout a lot of the space was wasted, but it was still a big space.

I was on the 5th floor of the hotel this weekend, the theme was orange, I have now stayed on every floor except the 1st which I think is mostly conference rooms anyway.  I am not sure why thread is to be associated with Birmingham, I would link it more with the weavers of Coventry.

The beanbag chair in the corner was very uncomfortable.

I am going to be at a loose end at the weekends now and will have to find something to occupy them.  I may even have to do some housework!

Hallowe'en Tunes and Theme Tunes

You will never be able to accuse me of not jumping on a bandwagon whenever one passes.

So, in no particular order, here are my top ten creepy tunes for Hallowe'en (may not be suitable for children or those of a nervous disposition, especially no.9)

1.  Soft Cell - Martin.  This track was inspired by George A Romero's film of the same name released in 1978.  It is very creepy but reminds me of Sunday evenings listening to Annie Nightingale on Radio 1.

2.  The Whistle Song from American Horror Story.  In isolation this is quite a jaunty tune, but the association with the horror series just gets the hairs on the back of the neck just lifting a bit.

3.  The Watch Chime from A Few Dollars More.  Again, in isolation not threatening at all, but combined with images of Lee Van Cleef and Clint Eastwood staring at each other and waiting for the chimes to finish, the tension just builds.

4.  Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells.  No explanation needed I think.

5.  Mike Oldfield - Sailor's Hornpipe.  It's that man again!  This is less scary-scary and more weird scary, like you wouldn't want to be in a room alone with the narrator.  I wouldn't anyway.

6.  Shakespeares Sister - Stay.  A song which can either be taken as being about a partner leaving or a loved one dying, there seems to be two schools of thought here.  I just like the track.

7.  Toyah - Angel & Me.  Every time I listen to this, I get the feeling that the Angel in the song is of the fallen kind.

8.  Hazel O'Connor - The Eighth Day.  A look ahead at what could happen in this over mechanised/automated world.

9.  Stealer's Wheel - Stuck in the Middle With You.  Not sure which is scarier, this version or the Bradley Walsh/Joe Pasquale collaboration.

10.  Ave Satani.  From The Omen, unlike some of the previous entries, this is really not scary when you listen to it out of context, or even in context, but, hey, it's from The Omen, and that kid was freaky!

Lose a stone by Christmas - Week 8

I missed last week's weigh in, and I think I should have missed this week's too!

The 2 pounds I lost in week 6 are back, and they brought a friend too.

On the upside, I have am having a fab time at the minute and so I am not too fussed about losing any weight.  Give it a couple of weeks till I am back to my usual grumpy self and I will be trying to diet again.

Goal: 14lbs
Lost this week: 3lb GAIN
Total lost: 1 lb GAIN
Still to lose: 15lbs

Sunday Night Mash Up.

I am just back from a fab weekend in Norfolk but I am absolutely worn out now.  I had thought about extending my stay until tomorrow, but seeing as all the morning trains are ALREADY cancelled because strong winds have been forecast I am glad that I didn't.

There were also some issues with the hotel this time, but they really do deserve a post of their own, so look out for that in the coming weeks.

I spent a pleasant few hours in Norwich yesterday, wandering around the castle and the shops, but spent far too much money.

Travelling across London today on the tube was awful, I have never seen it so busy.  And what is it about the tube that makes people want to canoodle? On the escalators.  On the trains.  Everywhere.

Also this week I had to submit my final assessments for both my current ACCA modules, after some fighting with the scanner and various internet issues I managed it.

It is payday Wednesday (yes!) and also Mum and Dad's wedding anniversary, 44 years.

Nursery Rhymes, cute or evil?

I was laying in bed listening to the rain hitting the window and this popped into my head..

It's raining, it's pouring,
The old man is snoring.
He went to bed,
And bumped his head,
And couldn't get up in the morning.

Something that I was taught and encouraged to recite as a child, but it got me thinking.  What is it about?  Are we encouraging children to find pleasure in an old man who, at the very least, has incapacitated himself badly.

I started to think about other nursery rhymes that we were all taught as children.

Mary, Mary, quite contrary
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockleshells,
And pretty maids all in a row.

Here we have a rhyme about Mary I of England, or 'Bloody Mary' as she came to be known.  Silver Bells and cockleshells were instruments of torture, silver bells being thumbscrews and cockleshells being attached somewhat lower on the male body. The pretty maids were the guillotines and the garden the cemetery where the bodies were buried.

Three blind mice, three blind mice,
See how they run, see how they run,
They all ran after the farmer's wife
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a thing in your life
As three blind mice.

Now this is pretty horrific already, three mice, already compromised by being blind, are now left in agony by having their tails chopped off.  However, this is yet another rhyme about Bloody Mary.

The three mice were three nobleman who realised that the Queen was not fit to reign and were discovered and burnt at the stake for treason.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the King's horses and all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.

Humpty Dumpty was the name of a cannon which sat on top of a fort wall.  The cannon fell and broke, when the soldiers tried to repair it they were slaughtered by their opponents.

Goosey, goosey gander,
Where shall I wander?
Upstairs, downstairs and in my lady's chamber
There I met an old man who wouldn't say his prayers.
So I took him by his left leg and threw him down the stairs.

Again, a tale pretty violent in its own right.  Goosey or Goose is believed to be 16th Century slang for a prostitute, in fact the red bumps caused by STI were known as Goose Bumps (remember that next time you are cold and tell everyone you have Goose Bumps).  The punishment for refusing to convert to the Church of England and say prayers in English instead of Latin as the Catholic faith required at the time, was having your legs tied together and being thrown down the stairs.

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.
She had so many children, she didn't know what to do;
She gave them some broth without any bread;
Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.
Then out went th' old woman to bespeak 'em a coffin,
And when she came back, she found 'em all a-loffeing.

And finally, for now anyway, we have a woman who has too many children to cope with, so she starves them and beats them adn then leaves them alone in bed whilst she goes and buys coffins for them.  Lovely.

Sunday Night Mash Up

Another weekend in Birmingham, another colour in the hotel.

This weekend was the last weekend of my ACCA tuition for this sitting.  This time I was on the 6th floor of the hotel and the colour is green!  You can't really tell from this photo, but the bed was massive.

And I had some great views over the city.

But boy, did it rain.  I had to go out to pick up an order from New Look which was about half a mile away from the hotel.  These were my jeans when I got back.  I actually struggled to take them off, they seemed to have stuck themselves to my calves.

I managed to dry my jeans out for today, but my trainers were still wet.

Today was the Birmingham Half Marathon which made getting from the hotel to college a bit of a challenge as most of the roads and crossings had been cordoned off, we even had to tell the security person that we were going to college before we were allowed past the barrier and down the alley way.

This was the square in front of the library before the majority of the runners arrived

This was at lunchtime

Well done to everyone who took part.

I also discovered this week that someone who unfriended me a year ago on facebook is still looking at my profile.  How do I know?  Because they accidentally caught the 'add friend' button whilst they were doing so, they immediately cancelled the request but the notification was sent to my phone.  If someone is going to stalk me, they need to be a bit more subtle about it!
